First Flight High School claimed two home field soccer wins against Manteo Monday night, taking a 4-0 JV victory and followed by a 2-1 conference win in the varsity game.

“It was a good game because First Flight is always a rivalry game,” said Manteo JV coach Michael Goetsch.

Goetsch said also that while he thought the First Flight team was well organized and well coached, his team missed some opportunities that might have turned the game around.

“We had our moments and it might have helped us get going,” he added, “but it just was not our night.”

After a scoreless first half it looked like it was going to be Manteo’s night in the varsity game when the visiting Redskins scored just over five minutes into the second period.

As the game appeared to wind down, First Flight scored on a blocked penalty kick rebound that tied the game and threw it into two 10-minute overtime sessions. Less than a minute into the first OT, First Flight scored again and, holding onto the 2-1 lead, the game ended with the Nighthawks on top for the night.

“It was a tough loss,” said Manteo varsity coach Ralph Cleaver. “But I was proud of the way our boys played.”

Cleaver went on to say his boys executed their game plan of outside attacks well and may have even played the best game of the season.

“I thought we defended well pretty much the entire game,” added Cleaver. “We were a bit unlucky in the final five minutes with the penalty kick awarded to First Flight, but that is part of the game.”

Cleaver also said he thought his team rebounded well.

“We had a momentary lapse in the start of overtime and that cost us,” Cleaver continued. “But overall, moving forward, I think by far this was our best game of the year and if we keep playing like that we’ll have a lot of wins ahead.”
