Community invited to radio control flying event

Members of Dare County Radio Control Flyers – the area’s local radio control model aviation club – will be holding a family-friendly flying event at their field at the Outer Banks Gun Club in Manns Harbor on Saturday, October 15, 2022 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Community members of all ages are invited to attend and any person attending will be afforded the opportunity to fly one of the club’s radio control aircraft.

There is no fee for attending or flying at this event, however the club is asking all attendees to bring at least one canned good or non-perishable food item per person. These items will be donated to the local food bank by the club following the event.

Those who wish to try flying a radio control model airplane will be able to do so utilizing an aircraft provided by the club under the supervision of one of the club’s flight instructors. Attendees will also be provided with lunch consisting of grilled hamburgers, hot dogs, chips and a beverage at no cost.

“This event was conceived as a way of giving back to our community while educating the public about the hobby of model aviation by affording the opportunity to those who are curious or interested to try flying a model without any cost,” stated the club’s president, Jim Davis. “We held a similar event last year that was very successful, and this year we will be encouraging attendees to become involved in the hobby by offering a number of prizes for those who give flying a try at this event.”

The prizes being offered include a complete ready-to-fly model airplane package and a number of one-year club memberships. Prize winners will be determined at the end of the day by a raffle drawing of those who participated in the day’s flying.

Dare County Radio Control Flyers was chartered in 1989 by the Academy of Model Aeronautics and serves to promote radio control model aviation as a sport and recreational activity at the home of the Wright Brothers first flight, the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The club is a self-supporting, non-profit organization that is always looking for new members to share their passion for radio control model aviation. Membership is open to anyone with an interest, including those with little or no experience in the hobby.
