Cape Hatteras volleyball wins three, heads to states

Cape Hatteras Secondary’s volleyball team finished the regular season on a win streak.

On Tuesday, Oct. 18, the Lady Hurricanes defeated Columbia 3-0 two matches.

On Wednesday, Cape Hatteras defeated Bear Grass, avenging an earlier season loss. Cape Hatteras won three sets. Bear Grass Charter took one set.

That win propelled the Lady Hurricanes to first place in the Atlantic 5 Conference. The Cape Hatteras team will play the first round of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s state playoffs on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 2 p.m. at the Cape Hatteras Buxton campus gymnasium. The opponent is Gates County.

Six senior volleyball players were celebrated Tuesday night with a wonderful ceremony at center court. The players accompanied by family members and friends were thanked at center court by Cape Hatteras Principal Beth Rooks, Assistant Principal Annette O’Neal, athletic director Woody Willis and coach Brittany Barnett.

Five of these six seniors have played volleyball for seven years. The sixth senior has played for six years.

And that experience showed in the match with Columbia. Cape Hatteras team members’ serving was crisp. Returns were placed in vacant places.

In the first set of the first match, seniors Kara Ammons reeled off 10 service points and Molly Hanburger served for six and set-point. In the second set, senior Christina O’Neal scored five service points and senior and match captain Lily Ratliff served for five and set point. Jazira Christ, a sophomore, served five points in both sets. In the third set, Christ served up eight points, while Ammons garnered five including an ace. Senior Grace Shoemaker served for six points.

In the second match, Columbia pushed Cape Hatteras into the second scoring round twice. In the third set, Columbia pushed ahead 7 to 3. Cape Hatteras tied at 15 and snared the set 25-16.

Cape Hatteras Secondary seniors playing varsity volleyball and celebrated on Oct. 18, 2022 were Maleia Quidley, Molly Hanburger, Christina O’Neal, Grace Shoemaker, Lily Ratliff and Karen Ammons.

Additional members of the Cape Hatteras Secondary varsity team are Jazira Christ, Elizabeth Fairbanks and Reece Zombro.
