The Hatteras Island Meals fall raffle was an astounding success.

This fall, the organization’s volunteers staffed ticket stations outside businesses on the island and showed up at events like Day at the Docks. Lots of people bought tickets and made donations at those stations.

The total raised in the raffle was $41,000, about half of the annual budget for Hatteras Island Meals.

Volunteers for Hatteras Island Meals bring nutritious meals to elderly or homebound clients on Hatteras Island. Currently, Hatteras Island Meals serves 45 residents throughout the island, with meals provided by Diamond Shoals in Buxton, Sonny’s in Hatteras village and Island Convenience and Waves Market & Deli in the island’s northern villages.

Last year, those volunteers delivered over 10,000 meals Monday through Friday to clients.

On Saturday, Oct. 22, 2022, seven raffle tickets were drawn from a golden cage by Angela Conner Tawes. Reading the contents of each raffle item was young Marissa Liner, a top ticket seller. The seven raffle packages, which were all valued at $1,000 or more, were won by:

Prize #1 – Teresa Black, Avon

Prize #2 – Eddie and Heather Ayers, Bethel

Prize #3 – Chris Taylor, Hatteras Island

Prize #4 – Susan Oakham, Carrsville, Va.

Prize #5 – Pam Barham, Rodanthe

Prize #6 – Terri Poteet, Hatteras village

Prize #7 – Tristan Hall, from Georgia, who is the grandson of one of the organization’s former drivers, who lives in Frisco.

The organization’s social media manager Debbie Owens was effusive in her Facebook messaging about raffle drawing day. “What an amazing day. We want to first thank all of our drivers, they are the wheels that keep this program in motion. We deliver 5 days per week. Thank you to all of our fantastic volunteers, each and every one of you make us who we are. It takes 7 Villages, Hatteras Village, Frisco, Buxton, Avon, Salvo, Waves & Rodanthe to keep Hatteras Island Meals moving. There are many moving parts to this organization and each and every one of you are important. We are humbled by all the folks who purchased raffle tickets; we appreciate all of your purchases and donations. Thank you to all of our sponsors too; you are amazing and so generous. Also a big thank you to all of the restaurants on Hatteras Island who lovingly prepare our meals. You are all HIM HEROES.”

Leading the organization is an executive committee with Mike Tidd as president, Betty Pritchard as vice president, Melanie Nelson as secretary and Bud Nelson as treasurer. Each community manager is also a member of the board as are representatives from Dare County.
