NCDOT has invited the public to a meeting Thursday, Nov. 10, 2022, about a Hatteras village bridge replacement.

The informal open house runs from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Hatteras village community building, located at 57689 NC 12 in Hatteras.

The 86-foot-long bridge being replaced was built in 1956 and is still safe for traffic but is considered structurally deficient. The new bridge will be about 10 feet longer than the old bridge, and will be safer for pedestrians and drivers as it will have wider lanes and shoulders, and five-foot sidewalks on either side. The cost to replace the bridge is estimated at $1.4 million, states a media release from the transportation department.

Construction is scheduled to start by the summer of 2023.

The bridge is designated as Bridge No. 8 on NC 12 over Slash Creek at the entrance to the center of Hatteras village. It is the first bridge to be crossed when coming from Frisco.

People can submit written comments at the meeting or by mail by midnight Nov. 24.
