Manteo Mayor Bobby Owens declared that the Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2022 meeting was the “shortest” in three years.

It lasted about 17 minutes. The first eight minutes the board dealt with the very short agenda and the last seven, the commissioners made comments.

For Manteo employees, a $400 mid-year bonus was approved unanimously. Commissioner Eddie Mann moved to pay $400 to each employee, $50 more than last year. Commissioner Darrell Collins seconded the motion.

The quasi-judicial hearing on Salt Meadow Landing special use permit will resume on Dec. 7, 2022 at 1 p.m.

The commissioners voted to approve an extension agreement for Cartwright Park, which is owned by the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. On Dec. 5, 2022, Bishop Kenneth Monroe, bishop of the Eastern District of the AME Zion Church, will be in Manteo to visit the park at 303 Bideford St. and sign the agreement.

The existing 25-year development and lease agreements are set to expire March 4, 2023. The extension agreement extends the lease for another 25 years, to March 4, 2048.

The extension agreement means the town can move forward with the improvements to the park.

Commissioners had great praise for the town’s Public Works employees for the setup and cleanup of Halloween festivities.

Commissioner Tod Clissold said “it’s amazing how many children and parents” came to downtown Manteo for Halloween night. “This town has come so far.”

Commissioner Sherry Wickstrom reported that by 7:15 p.m. she had handed out 300 candy bars. She said trick or treaters came in the “best costumes I’ve ever seen.”

Mann echoed praise for Public Works employees.

Owens commented “I think we have a wonderful town. We’re blessed to have the workforce that we have. I think we have a dedicated group.”

Notes: The town’s fall-winter trash pick-up is set for Saturday, Nov. 19, 2022. It starts at 8:45 a.m. with coffee and doughnuts at the Roanoke Island Maritime Museum on the Manteo waterfront.

Watch for an announcement for a Merry Market, Friday evening, Nov. 18, 2022.

The next Manteo Board of Commissioners meeting is set for 5 p.m., Nov. 16, 2022, at Town Hall.
