First Flight girls cross country fourth in state competition, Manteo girls fifth

Area high school cross country teams capped off the season at Kernersville with competition in the November 6 North Carolina High School Athletic Association State Cross Country Championships at Ivey Redmon Sports Complex.

First Flight girls had the best overall team performance in the 3A division with 96 points finishing fourth in a field of 18 scoring teams. Currituck County girls, with 336 placed 12th and First Flight boys placed 18th with 399 points.

2A action saw Manteo girls finish fifth among 16 teams with 148 points and Manteo boys placed 16th.

Individually, First Flight’s Lucy Stecher covered the 5,000 meter course in ninth place with a 19:49.42 time. Just over a minute back was Currituck County’ top runner, Kylee Dinterman, in 25th place at 21:06.56. Macy Parks at 18:58.80 helped pace North Lincoln to a team championship.

Jackson Hannon was First Flight’s top runner in the boys 3A race in 26th place with a time of 17:36.11. Gabriel Schmid (Orange) was the individual winner with a time of 15:44.28 and Croatan claimed the team championship with 143 points.

Helping Manteo to its fifth place finish, Madison Flynn finished in sixth place with a 20:48.06 behind the overall winner, Katherine Hopkins from Lincolnton, who clocked a 19:20.05. Leading Manteo boys over the 5,000 hilly terrain was Samuel Head in 46th with a time of 18:20.57. Jack Anstrom (Seaforth High) was the individual 2A winner with a time of 16:15.43 and Black Mountain’s Charles D. Owen High School grabbed the team championship with 83 points.
