First Flight swimmers prevail at two meets

First Flight High School swimmers kicked off their 2022-23 season with two wins in as many outings.

On Wednesday, November 16, the First Flight Nighthawks played host to the Manteo Redskins and Currituck Knights, where both the Nighthawks’ boys and the girls teams prevailed.

Team scores for the girls had First Flight in first place with 78 points, Manteo second with 55 and Currituck finished third with 30 points. Boys’ competition saw First Flight out in front with 90 followed by Currituck and Manteo with 55 and 13 points respectively.

Double individual winners for Manteo girls that day included Gwyneth Benkusky in the 200 individual medley and 100 meter breaststroke along with Meredith Gaskill in the 400 meter freestyle and 100 meter backstroke. Boys’ competition November 16 saw Logan Kennemore claim two individual firsts with his wins in the 100 meter butterfly and 400 meter freestyle.

Then on Friday, November 18, five area teams met at the YMCA in Elizabeth City and First Flight again came out on top. Team scores for the girls in that meet put First Flight out in front with 114 points ahead of second place Perquimans with 66, Currituck in third with 55, Camden fourth with 36 and John A. Holmes trailed with 9. For boys, it was First Flight in first with 116.5, Camden second with 73, third place was Currituck with 39.5 and Perquimans finished in fourth with 2 points.

The November 18 individual event double winners for First Flight Boys included Merrick Shumaker in the 50 and 100 meter freestyle and Jack Brown taking the 100 meter butterfly and 200 meter freestyle events. For Currituck, it was Logan Kennemore capturing the boys 100 meter butterfly and 400 meter freestyle.

The next high school meet will be the week after Thanksgiving.
