The annual Capstone research project presentation from the students of the UNC Institute for the Environment’s Outer Banks Field Site will be held in Buxton this year.

The 2022 Capstone research is a follow-up on the 2021 Capstone research project focused on changes in vegetation within the Buxton Woods Reserve over the last 34 years and residents’ values and perspectives of the Buxton Woods.

The program will be presented at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 5, 2022 at the Fessenden Center Annex, located at 47013 Buxton Back Rd. in Buxton.

The field site program is a semester-long, interdisciplinary residential learning experience for UNC Chapel Hill undergraduate students hosted by the Coastal Studies Institute on the East Carolina University Outer Banks Campus.

Each fall, students from the UNC Institute for the Environment spend a semester taking classes, engaging in internships and completing a Capstone research project.

During the presentation, students will share their research process and findings regarding community members’ perspectives on Buxton Woods and the type, extent, rates and reasons for change in the plant community since 1988. The presentation will be followed by a question-and-answer session and light refreshments will be provided.

The program will also be live-streamed and a recording of the presentation will be available on Coastal Studies Institute’s YouTube channel, youtube.com/unccsi. The public is welcome to attend and/or view the recorded presentation. A written Capstone report will be accessible at ie.unc.edu/education/field-sites/obx on the morning of Dec. 12, 2022.
