As I walked the shore not long ago, I spotted what I thought was an unusual shell. Upon closer inspection, it was something I had never seen before – sea glass. Walking further down the water’s edge, I collected a pocket full of these pieces in various shapes and colors. Some were amber, yellow, blue, green and white. My focus quickly shifted from shell collecting to combing for sea glass. I could see this would be a fun hobby.

Sea glass can be found along with shells that have washed up by the water. What were once bottles, glass containers and jars have been tumbled and broken into pieces that have been transformed by the strong action of the waves into beach glass. This doesn’t happen overnight. The once-clear glass is opaque and rounded from months and years in the water.

What I find fascinating is that local craftspeople and jewelry artisans are taking these gems of the sea and making “one of a kind” jewelry such as bracelets, rings, earrings, etc. Some pieces are quite expensive and contain very rare glass. It is the story of what was once old is new again. The broken pieces of tumbled jars and bottles are “born again” and very valuable in its new life of “sea glass.” This week I was gifted with a beautiful blue sea glass necklace that I will treasure always.

We can enjoy a new life, too. By giving our lives to God and believing in him fully, our lives are born again and transformed by Him. He wants us to live the life He has planned for us. He wants us to make Him first and to live in his precious abundance. Like the gems in the sea, we can change our direction, find a new life and live in the true beauty He intended for us now and for eternity.
