Manteo High School wrestlers competed at this past weekend’s USAF-Rosewood Eagle Invitational Tournament at Rosewood High School in Goldsboro with several Redskin grapplers earning place finishes at the two-day event.

Satisfied with the performances, Manteo High School wrestling coach Jimmy Metzinger said he thought overall his team was getting better at every outing.

“I thought the weekend was pretty good for us,” explained Metzinger. “Some of the guys and girls might not have quite finished where they wanted to, but in some of their tougher matches we are seeing some of the things we are working on in practice. So the level of competition we are seeing is pretty good for us.”

Metzinger went on to say he was trying to expose his wrestlers to what he calls “That Match,” which is the match they need to win to qualify for state.

“We are getting closer to what I feel is where we want to be in February,” he added.

Manteo competes as a 2A division school in the Northeastern Coastal 2A/3A conference with John A. Holmes, Hertford County, Northeastern along with 3A schools Currituck County and First Flight.

The high school regional tournaments are early February followed shortly after by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state finals February 16-18.
