Outer Banks pups are having tail-wagging fun at the Good Dog Retreat, and they couldn’t be happier about it.

The newly-renovated Good Dog Retreat – housed at the former location of Big Al’s Soda Fountain & Grill on the main highway in Manteo – features three indoor play areas totaling more than 1500 square feet, and three outdoor fenced areas totaling 15,000 square feet.

The business offers both doggy daycare and boarding. For boarding, dogs are provided with a comfortable and safe private sleeping area and the ability to frolic with other pups during the day. Guests can enjoy boarding add-ons like baths, nail trims, a FaceTime or Zoom call with their owner and even doggy ice cream cones.

“Our business is based around having fun while boarding; we strive to provide the best quality care for dogs. We have plenty of room to run around. Dogs that are boarded can also participate in Doggy Day Care which gives them an excellent outlet for their energy,” owners Katie Din and Mariel Grossman said.

Daycare is available for half or full days on weekdays. For social dogs, the play groups are rotated and sorted by size, play style and personality; or owners can opt for non-social daycare.

The owners said that they opened Good Dog Retreat because “we know that as the Outer Banks has grown over the past decade the need for boarding and daycare services for dogs has grown as well. It’s been a dream of ours to surround ourselves with animals since we were younger, so we are happy to now have a facility to provide a safe and fun atmosphere for your dogs.”

“Who wouldn’t want to play with dogs all day?” they added.

So far, the response from the community has been “outstanding” Din and Grossman said. “They have been so supportive and excited for us. We are steadily gaining repeat customers for both boarding and daycare services. It’s been really validating to see the dog community busting down our doors to come play, often dragging their humans behind them.”
