Chesapeake, VA – LCDR Benjamine Douglas Barbee Jr., USN, Retired, age 89, died Monday, February 6, 2023, at his home in Chesapeake, VA. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 18, 2023, at Mount Olivet United Methodist Church, Manteo, NC. Burial will take place in Shiloh United Methodist Church Cemetery, Stumpy Point, NC. Visitation will be held on Friday, February 17, from 6 until 8 p.m. at Twiford Colony Chapel in Manteo, NC.

Ben was born in Baton Rouge, LA on November 1, 1933 to Benjamine and Madeline Barbee, both deceased.  He enlisted in the Navy, servicing at the US Naval Bombing Range – Dare County, on USS FRIGATE BIRD (AMS-191), where he served with his brother Kennie, and later served as a medical corpsman on USS AMERICA (CV 66). After earning a Naval commission, he served with distinction as a Naval officer and hospital administrator at Portsmouth and Philadelphia Naval Hospitals, including the formation of the Navy’s first Alcohol Rehabilitation Centers. Early in his career, he was stationed in Stumpy Point where he met the love of his life and found a place that he would always come home to. After 25 years of dedicated service, Ben retired, after which, he and family moved back to Stumpy Point in 1977, where the house was always filled with love, great friends, and banjo picking.

He was predeceased by his wife of nearly 51 years, former Linda Wise of Stumpy Point.  Surviving daughters are Julie Barbee Wescott and her husband, Anthony Wescott of McClellanville, SC and Deanna Barbee Chabay and her husband, Edward Chabay of Chesapeake, VA, and four grandchildren, Justin and Ben Wescott, Amanda Robinson (Barry Robinson), and Elizabeth Osmundsen (Erik Osmundsen), and one great-grandchild, Sonja Osmundsen.  Surviving siblings are Leslie Barbee of Scottsboro AL, Argie Lynn Willis of Bella Vista, Arkansas, Kenneth Barbee of Portsmouth, VA, and sister-in-law Alice Wise of Nags Head.
