Wilma Hill, Alma Hyman and Clara Bellman were recently inducted into the Town of Kill Devil Hills’ newest exclusive society.

There are only two requirements – that you be a resident of the Town of Kill Devil Hills and be at least 100 years old.

The society began with a phone call from the family of Virginia Rettgers’ family about their mother, who was turning 100 early in 2022. The town decided to honor not only Virginia but all men and women who achieve the same status (though at this time all members are women). And so the Centenarian Society was born.

“While the idea came from family members of our first centenarian, we are thrilled to celebrate everyone in our small town who inspires us to stay healthy and live long and interesting lives!” said Mayor Ben Sproul. “One hundred is such a notable milestone! It’s still quite rare for anyone to personally know someone who achieves this age.”

Sproul visited Spring Arbor to induct the new members and present a certificate, a resolution approving their induction into the society and a bouquet of flowers. Once inducted, members are referred to as “Lord” or “Lady” since, as town clerk Michael O’Dell said, “they have certainly earned it.”
