Exodus 3:1, “Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian, and he led the flock to the far side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God.”

So many times when we are reading the Bible, things start off just like this. For Moses, it was just another day in his life. He had been tending these sheep for 40 years, moving them here and there for better pasture, to find them water, to protect them from the weather and the predators. He had probably been to this place before. And nothing has ever happened like what is about to.

And that is just like us and our days, isn’t it? We wake up in the morning and think about our day and we expect nothing unusual. It is just another Thursday. Sure, there are things we have to do; chores at home, tasks at work, people to see, maybe even something to celebrate. But as far as we know, it is just another ordinary day. In my life, there seems to be no particularly ordinary day, what I mean is I never really know where I will end up or what will happen. I make plans, but then something happens. Nothing bad or even big, mind you, just something that sends me off in a different direction. That is part of my ordinary days.

But some days, something extraordinary happens. Something wonderful or dreadful or just out of the ordinary. And if we are not careful, we can miss those things. We might wonder how we could miss something extraordinary, but it is simple if we are not looking for something to happen. And I think we always need to be looking for something like that, for God to show up, for an opportunity to present itself, for us to make a difference to someone or for God to make a difference to us. But far too often, we are so caught up in our ordinary, everyday life, that we miss it.

Father, open my eyes to see you every day. In Jesus’ name, amen.
