Exploring love and passion, The Red Shoes dances across the screen in what is considered the finest film about ballet ever produced. The Bryan Cultural Series will screen the film on Sunday, March 5 at 4 p.m. at the R/C Kill Devil Hills Movies 10, located at 1800 N. Croatan Highway in Kill Devil Hills. Tickets are $10 each and are available at the theater box office and online at the R/C Theater website.

The Red Shoes explores the tangle of human emotion that is a part of all of us. What does it mean to be passionate – is it an emotion that is reserved for another human only? Can the desire to achieve a great goal run so deeply within us that it becomes a destructive force? Can the human heart reconcile the passion to achieve and the love for another?

In many ways, The Red Shoes is a love story. Victoria Page (Moira Shearer) a young ballerina of immeasurable potential, falls in love with Julian Craster (Marius Goring), who is an equally as talented composer. The couple, though, cannot escape the Svengali-like presence of Boris Lermontov (Anton Walbrook), the manager of the Ballet Lermontov whose passion for ballet allows no room for human emotion.

What unfolds is a visually stunning film that brings the beauty of ballet to the screen as perhaps no movie before or after has ever achieved. But behind the perfection of Shearer’s dance performance, the welter of human emotion weaves a complex tale pitting the splendor of love against our passion to achieve.

Until Shearer puts on the red shoes for the final time it is never clear what will ultimately triumph.

The Red Shoes was nominated for five Academy Awards in 1949, including Best Picture. The film won for art direction and music. Fully restored to its original 1948 technicolor glory, this is a film not to be missed.

The Bryan Cultural Series presentation will include a 4 p.m. introduction and discussion of the film by Dr. Chris Palestrant, professor of music composition at ECSU. The film will screen at 4:30 p.m.
