Manteo takes two from Cape Hatteras

Cape Hatteras Secondary softball coach Tim Spruill is back at the Hatteras Island school. His varsity softball team lost March 9, 2023, but Spruill said “we will get better.” Manteo defeated Cape Hatteras on the softball field 15-2. Starting this game were Eryn Ratliff, Casia Ensenat, Lilian Ratiff, Taylor Mabry, Abby O’Neal, Grace Vernesoni, Gaby Baker, Christina O’Neal, Kira Ensenat, Ann Lord and Audrey Kramer, Kenzy O’Neal and Maya Stuart as subs. In Buxton on a cold Thursday night, Manteo baseball and softball teams squelched Cape Hatteras Secondary teams.
On the baseball diamond, Manteo triumphed 10-0. On the softball field, the score was 15-2. Both contests went five innings.
Just down the street in Frisco, the National Weather Service recorded 47 degrees at the start of both games. By the time the contests were finished the temperature was 39 degrees. The wind was out of the northeast at three miles per hour. That wind on the Buxton ballfields is coming right off Pamlico Sound.
For Manteo, Braeden Henry stayed on the mound for all five innings. He issued only one walk and struck out 11. He faced only 16 batters, holding Cape Hatteras to two baserunners. The first baserunner was cut down by his teammates turning a double play.
Wyn Wheeler garnered three hits, two runs and two stolen bases. Mason McCord is credited with three runs batted in.
For Cape Hatteras, Solomon Short started the game, pitching 2-2/3 innings, recording five strikeouts and issuing eight walks. He was tagged for seven runs in the first inning. Joey Gavetti finished the game and gave up two runs in the fifth.
On the softball field, scoring was tight for the first three innings. Manteo scored one run in the third and exploded for 13 runs in the fourth inning.
For Manteo softball, Jill Leary snagged three hits. Sydnee Ballance knocked in three runs. Erica Bailey, Manteo’s leadoff hitter scored three runs.
Emily Williams pitched four innings for Manteo and gave up three hits. She struck out four. She issued no walks. Bridgett Berry finished the game, giving up one hit and two runs.
For Cape Hatteras, senior Lilian Ratliff started the game and went 3-2/3 innings and gave up 10 runs on eight hits. Finishing the game was Taylor Mabry, who issued two hits, while Manteo scored another five runs.
On Thursday morning, Cape Hatteras Secondary’s Head Baseball coach Keith Durham canceled the Sandlot Tournament that was to be played Saturday, March 11. The weather forecast was “calling for game time temperatures to be in the 40’s with NW winds 25-30 miles per hour …”
