At Cape Hatteras Secondary School, Music in Our Schools Month is celebrated in March.

On March 14, the high school and middle grades students will perform an “Almost Spring Concert.” The high school band will perform the music for the Music Performance Assessment sponsored by the North Carolina Bandmasters. The concert starts at 6 p.m. in the campus auditorium.

On March 23, the high school band will participate in the Music Performance Assessment for the first time. The competition is set for Riverside High School in Williamston. Underwriting the band participation is the Hatteras Island Youth Education Fund.

The Cape Hatteras performance is set for 4:50 p.m. at Riverside High School.

For this event, Cape Hatteras band director Sean McCroskey explains that bands from across the state travel to locations to perform rated pieces of music before a panel of three judges. After the stage performance, the band moves to another room and sight reads a piece of music that the band has not seen before another judge. At the end, the band receives a rating that is recorded with the North Carolina Bandmasters Association.

The Albemarle Honors Band Clinic held March 24 and 25 wraps up Music in the Schools month for Cape Hatteras band students. Students participating already have music. A concert will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 25 at First Flight High School.

In May, strings students will perform at the Cape Hatteras Electric Cooperative Annual Meeting and all band students will perform in a spring concert.

A graduation band will play at the 2024 Cape Hatteras graduation ceremony on June 10.
