Outer Banks Conservationists and the Currituck Beach Lighthouse welcome the public to climb for free on the first day of the lighthouse’s 2023 season, March 18, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Open to the public since 1990, the tower will be open every day in season (weather permitting) from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through November 30. Enjoy the beautiful grounds, the 220 steps to the top, the panoramic view of the northern Outer Banks, a unique elliptical brick path and the Victorian stick style buildings. The smaller keeper’s dwelling is also open as a museum shop. It is located at 1101 Corolla Village Road in Corolla.

Learn from docents, brochures, exhibits and artifacts about shipwrecks, the lives of lighthouse keepers, the history of the tower and the original first order Fresnel lens. The night marker is a 3 second on, 17 second off pattern; the day marker is the tower’s unpainted red brick. A public, active aid to navigation, the Currituck Beach Lighthouse was built in 1875 to fill the last remaining “dark space” on the east coast.

Those aged four and older are welcome to climb. The fee to climb is $12 per person for the 2023 season. Season passes are available and can be purchased at obcinc.org/season-passes/. Admission may be paid at the tower only (no advanced or online tickets are available). A liability waiver must be signed prior to climbing. Leashed pets are welcome on the lighthouse grounds. Children 0-3 do not climb on their own, but may enter secured in backpacks only, noted an Outer Banks Conservationists press release.

Outer Banks Conservationists owns the tower through the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act and collaboration with the Department of the Interior, the State of North Carolina and the United States Coast Guard to maintain the site and its historic accuracy.
