Samuel Earl Gibbs, 85, of Columbia, died Thursday, March 16, 2023 at his residence.

Mr. Earl was born in Hyde County on October 3, 1937, to the late Seigfred Spencer Gibbs and Martha Brickhouse. He had an extensive career in the automotive industry working for multiple companies and later owning and operating Gibbs Motor Company in Columbia for forty-nine years.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing and watching western movies.

A funeral service will be held on Sunday, March 19, 2023 at 2 p.m. at Wesley United Methodist Church. Pastor Vickie Woolard and Pastor Ben Van Staalduinen will officiate. Burial will follow in the family plot in Azalea Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. and other times at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Carl and Elaine Jones.

Surviving are three daughters, Elaine G. Jones (Carl) of Columbia, Scarlet Gibbs Hall (Thomas) of New Bern, and Jackie G. Thomas (David) of Manteo; three grandchildren, Andy Jones (Brooke) of Columbia, Megan J. McLaughlin (Scott) of Zebulon and Jacquelyn Thomas of Raleigh; five great-grandchildren, Dawson Jones, Crewe Jones, Lanie Jones, Allie Grace McLaughlin, and Graham McLaughlin.

He was preceded in death by a brother Ray Gibbs and a sister, Faye G. Jackson.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Tyrrell County Animal Shelter, PO Box 449, Columbia, NC 27925.
