Seeing smoke: Prescribed burn conducted on Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge

Smoke and flames from a 1600 acre prescribed burn on the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge could be seen for miles on Monday, March 20, 2023. Refuge fire crews conducted the burn to “set back woody vegetation, improve wildlife habitat, and reduce fuel loads,” according to a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service statement.
