The black bear (Ursus americanus) population on the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge does not hibernate during the winter months, as do black bears living in the frozen northern states and Canada.

This large bear looks like it’s been eating well all winter.

Male bears can get as large as 900 lbs. and females top out about 500 lbs., according to USFWS.
