Swansboro, NC – David Lane Midgett, 66, of Swansboro, NC died on Monday, April 10, 2023, at ECU Health Medical Center in Greenville, NC. A native and longtime resident of Stumpy Point, NC, he was born on January 28, 1957.

David was the son of the late Donald and Rebecca Midgett of Stumpy Point, NC, and was preceded in death by his brother, Michael Buckner of Kitty Hawk, NC. He is survived by his wife, Karen Midgett; daughter Jessica Dalrymple (Billy) of Virginia Beach, VA; son Aaron Midgett (Stacey) of Swansboro, NC; grandchildren Luci, Isaac, Cami, Asher, and Emerson; sisters Donna Whitehurst (Felix) of Greenville, NC, and Diane Griffin (Doug) of Rocky Mount, NC; brother Steve Midgett (Lynn) of Kitty Hawk, NC; many extended family members and friends.

David graduated from Manteo High School in 1975 and went on to earn an associate degree in Woodworking from Pitt Community College. His passion for woodworking began during his teenage years when he worked as a commercial fisherman in Stumpy Point. In his twenties, David transitioned to furniture building and cabinet making, working independently for several years before being hired by Davis Yachts as a Supervisor for Yacht Interiors in his thirties.

David’s talent and dedication to his craft led him to establish his own business, The Carpenter Shop, in Stumpy Point. There, he built yacht interiors for renowned companies such as Spencer Yachts, Blackwell Boatworks, Bayliss Boatworks, Taylor Made Boats, Briggs Boatworks, Scarborough, and Grady White. In 2016, David retired from the yacht-building industry, leaving behind a legacy of exceptional craftsmanship and a lasting impact on the boating community. After his retirement, David was commissioned by the Stumpy Point Civic Association to rebuild the community sign, which now proudly reads “Stumpy Point Village.”

Throughout his life, David was deeply involved in his community, serving as a member of Bayview Chapel for 38 years and a Trustee of the church in Stumpy Point. Additionally, he was a Trustee of the Stumpy Point Community Building and a Volunteer Fireman for the Stumpy Point Volunteer Fire Department. David’s commitment to his community was a testament to his selfless nature and desire to make a difference in the lives of those around him.

David’s loving and kind spirit will be remembered by all who knew him. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, always putting the needs of others before his own. His unwavering dedication to his family, community, and craft will live on in the hearts and memories of those who were fortunate enough to know him.

David’s life will be celebrated at Twiford Colony Chapel in Manteo on Saturday, April 22, 2023, at 4 p.m. with Pastor Kenny Midgett officiating. Inurnment will take place in the Shiloh United Methodist Church Cemetery in Stumpy Point.
