The Rodanthe-Waves-Salvo Civic Association will hold a free Earth Day celebration on Saturday, April 22 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the villages’ community building, located at 23646 NC 12 in Rodanthe.

The event will start with local volunteers picking up supplies for the spring Adopt-a-Highway cleanup along NC 12 from Rodanthe to Salvo.

Starting at 11 a.m., fun learning experiences from gardening to sustainable living will be offered.

Bring the family and enjoy planting stations for children big and small and make seed balls for wildflowers. Adults can participate in a plant swap and pick up a free native plant while supplies last.

Community and government agencies will be present to share information and tools for more sustainable and resilient living. Guests include:

– NC Cooperative Extension and Master Gardeners

– Cape Hatteras Electric Cooperative

– National Park Service

– Dare County Library – Hatteras Branch

– Dare County Recycling

– Frisco Native American Museum

– Outer Banks Lighthouse Society

– Local beekeepers from Rodanthe-Waves-Salvo

The civic association will also be serving up grilled items and a salad bar with proceeds benefitting its scholarship fund. Raffles will also benefit the scholarship fund, which serves high school graduates from the villages.

Several businesses are supporting the celebration with financial sponsorship and donations. Organizers appreciate early support from Surf or Sound Realty, Midgett Realty, Ace Hardware in Avon, Conner’s Supermarket, Buxton Village Books, Hatteras Island Pet Resort and Waves Coffee and Candies.

This is a rain or shine event. If it’s raining, the event will be inside the community building.

“Come join us as we celebrate and make our world a happy and healthier place to live,” writes Amberly Dyer, Earth Day Committee chair.
