The Town of Kill Devil Hills has announced that its fire department has recently received an ISO rating of one by North Carolina Insurance Commissioner and State Fire Marshal Mike Causey. The Kill Devil Hills Fire Department is now one of only 28 fire departments out of more than 1,200 in the state of North Carolina to have an ISO rating of one.

An ISO fire rating is a score provided to fire departments and insurance companies by the NC Department of Insurance Office of the State Fire Marshal. The North Carolina Response Rating System ranges from one (highest score) to 10 (not recognized as a certified fire department by the state). Among other things, inspections conducted for the ratings look for proper staffing levels and their intensive training, appropriate equipment and its maintenance, E-911 communications capabilities and systems, community risk reduction activities which includes inspections, investigations, community outreach and prevention, as well as the availability of a sufficient water supply system. Fire department ratings affect homeowners’ and businesses’ insurance premiums. The high rating could result in a potential for improved insurance rates; it will be effective July 1, 2023.

“I’d like to congratulate Chief Tilley for the department’s performance and the hard work of all the department members. The citizens in the town should rest easy knowing they have a fine group of firefighters protecting them and their property in case of an emergency,” stated Causey.
