I love this time of year because I dream of what my little courtyard will look like since I began planting a variety of flowers this week. This year I have recycled somewhat. The poinsettia from Christmas, the pink hydrangea from Valentine’s Day and the two lilies from Easter that have enjoyed my porch have now been planted. Adding to that the white vinca, soft pink mandevilla, fern, green potato vine and yellow lantana. It is already colorful before the layer of mulch was put down.

Like a kid in a candy store who feels on top of the world, I feel that way about shopping at a garden center. Oh and not to forget the herbs are in the ground, too. Such expectation on my part for the lush flowers that are sure to delight all summer. Plant now and harvest later. Part of the joy of spring for me is to plant some little flowers and watch them flourish into mounds of color by the end of the season.

Whether you have a big or little space to work with, growing flowers keeps hope alive. Don’t diminish the importance of the little things that God gives us to do. It is a reminder that little efforts can grow into something big. It is a great lesson for a child … a sunflower seed can grow twice a tall as a youngster with a face to match. Whether we are planting flowers or dreams, our hope is in God because our roots of faith run deep. That’s when we can count on the harvest to manifest.
