An American oystercatcher pair in the upper shell beds south of off-road vehicle ramp 44. Ramp 44 provides off-road vehicle and pedestrian access throughout the year to the beaches nearest Cape Hatteras, as well as access to the cape itself.

“American oystercatchers survive almost exclusively on shellfish – clams, oysters, and other saltwater molluscs. Because of this specialized diet, oystercatchers live only in a narrow ecological zone of saltmarshes and barrier beaches,” states the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. “American oystercatchers are numerous but sensitive to development and traffic on the beaches where they nest.”
