Manteo High School will receive its AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) Demonstration School validation results on May 16, 2023.

Manteo High School has undergone a rigorous review process to be considered as a National Demonstration School and could become the eighth school in North Carolina to receive this honor.

AVID National Demonstration Schools are exemplary models of the AVID College Readiness System. To receive validation, schools must demonstrate an ongoing pursuit of excellence to ensure college readiness for all AVID Elective students and improved academic performance for all students.

Manteo High School began using the AVID program during the 2006-07 school year. Since implementing AVID strategies schoolwide, Manteo High School’s on time graduation rate has increased from 61% in 2005-06 to 95.7% in 2021-22. School administrators credit the AVID program as one of the factors that has improved students’ academic success and the school’s overall growth.

“At the end of my first year at Manteo High School, the district sent a group of secondary administrators and teachers to AVID Summer Institute in Atlanta. It was there that I first became convinced that when done with fidelity, the common language, routines and structures, and best practices of AVID would move the school from a School of Promise to a School of Distinction,” said MHS Principal John Luciano.

There are currently 104 students in the MHS AVID program, however AVID strategies are used throughout the school.

AVID is a nonprofit organization that provides educators with proven, real-world strategies to accelerate the performance of underrepresented students. AVID’s mission is to close the opportunity gap by preparing all students for college and career readiness and success in a global society.
