NCDOT workers recently changed speed limit signs, a sure sign that the peak travel season for Hatteras Island is looming.

This year a new section of NC 12 on the island is now 35 miles per hour, to the consternation of frequent Hatteras Island drivers.

As expected, the speed limit in Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo and Avon dropped to 35 from the off-season 45 miles per hour.

The speed limit at the top of the island in Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge is 55, except on the Capt. Richard Etheridge Bridge, which is 45. The speed limit is also 55 between Salvo and Avon. Those are the only stretches of the highway speed.

Between Avon and Buxton, the speed limit is 45 miles per hour.

The new section is Buxton and Frisco. Normally, the 35 miles per hour speed limit changes to 45 miles per hour just before The Pamlico Inn in Buxton. The stretch is now marked 35 miles per hour all the way to the end of Frisco.
