September is Library Card Sign-Up Month

On Sept. 3, 2024, Dare County Board of Commissioners adopted a proclamation declaring September Library Card Sign-Up Month.
County librarian Meaghan Beasley told the commissioners that “Dare County libraries are experiencing a growth phase.”
At the end of the 2024 fiscal year, she reported that use of audiobooks and ebooks was up 15%. Logons to the system’s free wifi increased 51% and use of public computers was up 33%.
Home visit materials checked out increased 18%.
Attendance at adult programs skyrocketed 156%.
New Dare County Library cards issued increased 25% during the year.
And 211,000 items were checked out.
Dare County has three public library locations:

– Kill Devil Hills: 400 Mustian Street, Kill Devil Hills, phone: 252-441-4331
Two types of cards are available: Online Access Only Card and Regular Library Card
Online Digital Resources Account. Dare County residents and property owners of all ages can apply for an Online Access Only from home at darenc.gov/departments/libraries/apply-for-online-digital-resources-account/-fsiteid-1.
Regular library card application is also online for full time residents, children, teens and property owners. Download the application at darenc.gov/departments/libraries and take the completed application to the closest library or go to one of the three libraries and fill out an application.
