In a field of beautiful sunflowers, an Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge black bear (Ursus americanus) is an example of how tough it can be in the wild.
“This beast’s ears are flat to the head unlike a healthy bear. This probably affects the bear’s ability to hear as sharply as needed. The eyes looked damaged or irritated which might affect a black bear’s already not so great long-distance vision. Black bears can also suffer from allergies,” notes USFWS. “It can be a tough world in the wild. Whether this bear was damaged in a battle with other bears, or suffers from genetic variations, or even allergies, it is a beast in a field of beautiful sunflowers.”
Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge is one of nine national wildlife refuges in the Coastal North Carolina National Wildlife Refuges Complex. For more information, call 252-473-1132.
