Exodus 29:42-43, “For the generations to come this burnt offering is to be made regularly at the entrance to the tent of meeting, before the LORD. There I will meet you and speak to you; there also I will meet with the Israelites, and the place will be consecrated by my glory.”

These commands Moses is giving, which really come from God, are not just for the Israelites who are living in that day, standing there and witnessing all of the things that are happening. God is making this covenant with the Jews for generations to come. Each successive group of people are to understand they are part of this covenant. And that is why the sacrifices are to continue, as a reminder to every new crop of people that God is their God, that they are in a relationship and a covenant with him, that God desires their fellowship, and that God has given them rules to follow.

And God says he will continue to meet there at the tent of meeting with those folks down through the ages. This is not just the religion or covenant of their fathers or grandfathers or folks even farther back; it is a covenant with them. God does not change, his expectations of them do not change, his promises of blessings do not change, his love for them does not change, and God wants their love and commitment to him to remain strong as well. And for that to happen each generation, each person has to realize this for themselves.

And that is true of our relationship with the Lord today. Of course, we don’t offer those sacrifices and the tabernacle is long gone, as are the temples that followed. But we have a better, a perfect sacrifice in the crucifixion of Jesus. But every day we need to be reminded of that sacrifice, of the relationship that God wants for each of us. And we need to do our part to keep our commitment to God strong, to keep the love of God before our eyes, and to be reminded of what God did and what we need to do.Father, keep me mindful of you daily. In Jesus’ name, amen.
