Beaufort County Community College has announced that Ethan Carrow, a dedicated tutor in its Learning Enhancement Center, has been awarded the North Carolina Tutoring and Learning Association (NCTLA) Professional Tutor of the Year. This prestigious award recognizes exceptional contributions to student success and excellence in the field of academic support.

Carrow, who has been with Beaufort CCC for three years, is known for his student-centered approaches to helping tutorees reach their academic goals. He graduated from the college with an associate in science in 2022 and earned a bachelor of science in biology from East Carolina University. Specializing in biology, chemistry and math, he has earned a reputation for creating a welcoming and inclusive learning environment that fosters confidence and mastery.

“Not only did Ethan conduct a professional and well-received presentation, he was also selected as the NCTLA Professional Tutor of the Year,” said James Casey, director of the Learning Enhancement Center. “You can imagine my pride. Ethan has proven himself an invaluable asset to the LEC and to BCCC as a whole.”

The NCTLA award highlights Carrow’s innovative tutoring methods. His work has been integral to the college’s push to boost student success, noted the announcement from the school. The college holds one of the highest transfer success rates within the NC Community College System, ranking seventh. Students who left the college with 30+ credit hours and continued to a university remained enrolled or graduated from the university a year later.

“I’m deeply honored to receive this recognition,” said Carrow. “Tutoring is much more than just helping students pass a test; it’s about building their confidence and equipping them with the tools they need to succeed long-term. Watching a student build an internalized understanding that can be applied elsewhere is the greatest reward.”

As Professional Tutor of the Year, Carrow was celebrated at the NCTLA Annual Conference and will serve as an ambassador for the importance of academic support in higher education.

“Beaufort County Community College is proud to have Ethan Carrow on its team and looks forward to his continued contributions to student success,” stated the announcement.

Carrow is currently working on an interdisciplinary doctorate in biology at East Carolina University, with research in reproductive cell biology and teaching methods.
