College of The Albemarle (COA) has announced a new partnership with Tire, Lube and Car Care (TLC) Service Center in Elizabeth City, offering an entry-level automotive technician course designed to prepare students for success in the automotive industry. “This collaboration furthers COA’s commitment to delivering high-quality workforce training that equips students with the skills and knowledge needed to transform their tomorrows,” noted the announcement.
The 96-hour course provides an in-depth introduction to the essential systems of the automobile, including electric, brakes, engine, fuel, exhaust, ignition, lubrication, cooling, transmission, steering and suspension systems. Students will learn the theory and function of each system, along with practical, hands-on training, as well as gain real-world skills that will prepare them for further study or entry-level work in the automotive field.
TLC, owned by COA alumnus William Blanchard, will be a vital partner in this initiative by providing state-of-the-art facilities for hands-on training. “As a proud graduate of COA, it’s an honor to give back to the institution that laid the foundation for my career,” said Blanchard. “Through this partnership, we’re not just teaching technical skills – we’re building futures and contributing to the strength of our local workforce.”
COA’s dean of workforce development, public services and career readiness Robin Zinsmeister shared, “This collaboration exemplifies the power of community connections. By joining forces with TLC, we’re creating a pathway for students to gain real-world experience, opening doors to rewarding careers in the automotive industry.”
The COA Foundation, specifically the Excellence and Innovation Fund, provided $10,000 in start-up support for this program to launch in Elizabeth City. The funds will be used to purchase equipment.
The first class is scheduled to begin on February 25 and registration is open now. Interested individuals are encouraged to contact the COA Workforce Development and Continuing Education Office at 252-335-0821 ext. 2250 for more information. “Join us to take the first step toward a promising career in the automotive industry,” stated the announcement.
