Currituck County Government began its 2025 Citizens Academy with an opening session on Thursday, January 30, 2025 in the Historic Courthouse. The meeting kicked off a 12-week series of classes designed to teach county residents about the departments and operations of county government and provide information on the many services provided to citizens.

Paul O’Neal, chairman of the Currituck County Board of Commissioners, welcomed the class of approximately 20 citizens and thanked them for showing an interest in learning more about local government. He was followed by Rebecca Gay, county manager, who provided a brief history of Currituck County’s formation, governing body and organizational structure. Gay also taught the class about which services a county is required to provide, services a county may provide if it chooses, and functions that a county is prohibited to perform by state law.

Additional opening night presenters included Rob Cain, veteran services officer; Melissa Futrell, human resources director; and Leeann Walton, clerk to the Board of Commissioners. Each explained their role within the local government and services that they or their staff provide to the public.

This is the fourth year of Currituck County’s Citizens Academy. The class meets weekly between January 30 and April 17 for a total of 12 sessions and receives presentations from more than 20 county departments. Many class sessions are interactive and include demonstrations of technology and equipment. Classes meet at various county facilities so participants can view county workspaces and become more familiar with departments.
