Homecoming: Hurricanes win three basketball games

At Cape Hatteras Secondary’s homecoming, Hurricane teams won three basketball games against the Mattamuskeet Lakers.

Playing Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2024, the boys junior varsity team won its match-up 43-41. The girls varsity team crushed the visiting Lady Lakers 50-15. The boys varsity team finished the game at 48-38.

The JV game was close. The Lakers were ahead by two at the end of the first quarter but Cape Hatteras outscored the Lakers in the second to go to the half-time dressing room up by six, 24-18. Both teams scored a dozen points in the third.

In the final quarter, the Lakers outscored the Hurricanes by four points but not enough to win.

For Cape Hatteras JV, Seaton Midgett was the high scorer with 20 points. Liam Van Druten scored 10 points, six of which were from the free line.

For Mattamuskeet JV, NiJoel Gibbs scored 21 points and Artrail Patton scored 14 points.

Cape Hatteras varsity girls simply overpowered Mattamuskeet, piling up 19 points in the first quarter. In that quarter, Taylor Hickman scored nine of her 12 game-high points, including one of two threes. In the first quarter, the Lady Hurricanes scored 19 points. All of the 10 players who entered the game for Cape Hatteras scored.

The Lady Hurricanes now have a 4-2 record in Atlantic Conference play, third in the six-team conference.

The boys varsity game seesawed back and forth. At the end of the first quarter, Cape Hatteras was down by five. At half-time, the Hurricanes were up by five, 22-17.

Mattamuskeet soared in the third, posting 14 points to the Hurricanes eight. Cape Hatteras entered the fourth down by three points. The teams traded points, until Mattamuskeet was up by 37-34. Then, Cape Hatteras went on a scoring binge, scoring 11 unanswered points.

For Cape Hatteras, Ty Stephens scored 21 points and Trae Wyatt 15. Wyatt scored 11 of 12 from the foul line. For Mattamuskeet, Diego Beltcam scored 12 points.
