For a few days in January, Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge was blanketed in several inches of snow.
“You never know what you’ll see on the refuge,” stated USFWS. “But after a snow you can be sure that you’ll see just about any wildlife that is out. It’s pretty tough to blend into the scenery when it’s all white!”
Wilson’s snipes (Gallinago delicata) are a good example. Normally their brown and white feather pattern allows the snipe to blend in well with the low-level ground growth of grasses, weeds and brush.
“We wonder how effective it is trying to pretend to be a pine cone?” noted USFWS.
