Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

By Mike Caton

Exodus 34:10, “Then the LORD said: ‘I am making a covenant with you. Before all your people I will do wonders never before done in any nation in all the world. The people you live among will see how awesome is the work that I, the LORD, will do for you.’”

God is making this covenant with these people. There can be no doubt the people need this covenant, they are certainly lost without God. They have come out of Egypt, with God’s help, but are in the wilderness now. And there is no way they could take the promised land on their own. And more important than having a place on earth to live, they cannot get themselves to heaven and eternal life. These people have been slaves for 400 years, they have been told exactly what to do, they have not had to think for themselves, or make provision for themselves. Jesus would later compare his generation to sheep without a shepherd, and that fits these folks as well.

But God is reaching out to them. Initiating a relationship, a covenant with them. And God will do miraculous things among them and for them. He has already provided them with bread, quail and water on their journey. Their shoes and clothes will not wear out on this trip. None of their enemies will be able to defeat them. They will conquer a land that is already settled and people are established in. They would be able to do none of this on their own, it is only because God is going before them, fighting their battles, providing for them, and so forth.

God has reached out to us and instigated a covenant with us as well. From the beginning, the first sin, we are told about the Messiah who was coming. And in the New Testament we see Jesus ushered into the world. And God is offering that relationship with not just the Jews, but everyone who lives on the earth. We need to accept his offer. We need his guidance and care. And the world ought to see the presence and the power of God in our lives.

Father, thank you for your love and care. In Jesus’ name, amen.
