To the Editor:
Our Outer Banks is a laid-back vacation wonderland. People who live in much of our main market in Northern Virginia and Southern Maryland plan and save all year for their relaxing vacations. While they are here, some folks declare a vacation from cooking and frequent our many fine restaurants. Some of our long-time renters buy their own vacation homes.
The Federal Government is the powerful economic locomotive that pulls the economy forward in our main market areas. Virginia has a higher number of Federal employees than any other state. Now thousands of highly qualified and well compensated Federal employees are fired with the click of a key. Their remaining co-workers are traumatized at how arbitrary and ruthless the “You’re Fired” decisions were.
You might think the Federal layoffs are far away and have no affect here. But when uncertainty and hard times occur, people try to pay down their credit cards and other debts. They also “staycation” – vacation while staying at home.
Brace yourselves!
