The Outer Banks Shag Club will be offering a series of free beginner shag dance classes at the Baum Center in Kill Devil Hills. Classes will be held each Tuesday in March from 3:30 – 4:45 p.m. These classes are designed to introduce the dance to “the non-shagger” or other that may only be somewhat familiar with the dance. All to help people feel comfortable with stepping on the dance floor and shagging with others at the many venues where this dance is enjoyed up and down the east coast. Registration will occur when you come to the first class. The Baum Center will have some forms to fill out as well. So, come early on your first day.

Coming with a dance partner is helpful; however, singles are welcome too. Singles will be partnered with other singles or an Outer Banks Shag Club volunteer.

Carolina shag is the state dance of both North and South Carolina. Its steps are similar to East and West Coast swing. The Outer Banks Shag Club has been meeting, socializing and dancing in the area since 1990. The club’s purpose is to promote and preserve the heritage of beach music and shag dancing, noted an announcement from the club: “Come out, learn and dance becoming more of what has been so much a part of beach history and one of the joys of beach living.”
