During the migratory winter season in the flooded farm fields and waterways of Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge, visitors may see flocks of northern pintails (Anas acuta).
Besides eating insects, grain and seeds in fields and along the perimeter of wetlands, pintails dabble along the surface area of ponds, lakes and other watered areas using their bills to filter insects, seeds and other food sources.
