American avocets: Gathering food on the refuge

With such long, curved bills, how and what do American avocets eat? One way these birds eat, shown here on the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge, is called scything.
“It’s basically stirring up the water to gather food. They walk in shallow water, dip their slightly-opened bills sideways and move their heads side to side to catch aquatic invertebrates,” noted USFWS.
“They can also peck their prey and plunge their heads under water to grab food off the bottom. And sometimes, they eat small seeds.”
