Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Exodus 34:5, “Then the LORD came down in the cloud and stood there with him and proclaimed his name, the LORD.”

Can we even begin to imagine this scene? Moses went up the mountain and the Lord came down in a cloud and stood there with him. What must that have been like? What did Moses see? What did he feel? What did he smell? What did he hear?

There is no doubt this is a special gift, a unique experience Moses had here. Not since the Garden of Eden has man been this close to the Lord. Sure, there were times when God appeared to the patriarchs: Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. God has not abandoned or given up on his people. But those experiences were rare. And they were only glimpses of God, when he renewed covenants, or reinforced his promises to them. But God came and spoke to Moses as friends speak, face to face 33:11.

We will not have the same experience as Moses. But we must remember that God speaks to us now through his Son, Hebrews 1:2. Jesus, Immanuel, God with us has come into the world. He lived a physical life, and returned to heaven. We have a record of his life, deeds and words in the New Testament. And we have the opportunity to read and study those words at any time. Jesus also sent the Holy Spirit to us, to be our guide and comforter. God is still revealing himself to us and he is still proclaiming his glory.

The question is, Am I listening?

Father, help me to listen. In Jesus’ name, amen.
