Cape Hatteras baseball wins over Albemarle

Cape Hatteras Secondary’s baseball team racked up at 15-2 win over the Albemarle School Colts in Buxton on Wednesday, March 12, 2025.

The Hurricanes scored in all five innings of the ballgame, but turned in a go-ahead first inning scoring seven runs to Albemarle’s 2.

Cape Hatteras coach Keith Durham brought Landen Sonnier to the mound after two outs in the first inning. Sonnier pitched the remainder of the game, giving up no runs and two hits. He struck out seven batters and walked three. In the second inning, Sonnier walked one batter, but delivered three strikeouts to retire the side.

For Cape Hatteras, Jesus Garcia-Caldera started on the mound. He gave up Albemarle’s two runs, one hit and walked three batters.

Cape Hatteras batters put on a show. Shortstop James McCoy smacked the ball over the center field fence for a home run in the fourth inning. He also hit a single and walked twice. Three batters hit doubles: catcher Preston Stowe, Landen, Wyatt Cannon, who is also credited with a triple.

Pitching for Albemarle were Ryder DeBerry, Aiden DeBerry, Whit Meher, Chase Aydelett and Jay Borg.

Playing baseball for the Cape Hatteras Hurricanes this season are senior McCoy; juniors Joe Letierri, Stowe, Trae Wyatt, Joey Gavetti, Mikie Gavetti and Riley Richardson; sophomores Paizley Schultz, Jesus Carcia-Caldera, Gage Byrd, Graham Stutts, Liam Van Druten and Sonnier and freshmen Anthony Gavetti and Wyatt Cannon.

Remaining home baseball games are March 17 against TEACH at 6 p.m.; March 21 against Ocracoke at 5 p.m., Hobgood Charter at 5 p.m., April 4 against Mattamuskeet at 5 p.m. and April 11 against Bear Grass at 5 p.m. From April 21 through 25 is spring break. On April 29, Cape Hatteras takes on Columbia for senior night and family picture night. The game starts at 5 p.m., but festivities start earlier.
