Juvenile placed in custody after shots fired in Colington

Around 3:30 a.m. on March 11, 2025, Dare Central received a “shots fired” call from Colington Harbour.

Dare County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded.

Around 9:17 a.m., a Facebook posting from DCSO stated that the department “is currently investigating a ‘Shots Fired’ call in Colington Harbor. This occurred around 3:30 in the morning of March 11, 2025.

Deputies canvassed the neighborhood.

About 8:17 that night, Dare County Sheriff Doug Doughtie posted another Facebook message thanking the public “for the phone calls and messages that assisted us in today’s events!” He announced that the “Shots Fired” call in Colington was solved.

The shots fired came from Sir Richard East, a street inside the Colington Harbour gated community.

DCSO personnel prepared juvenile petitions which were filed with Juvenile Services. The juvenile, who is under 18 years of age and who did not resist law enforcement officers, was placed in secure custody and transported to the closest juvenile detention center, operated by the State of North Carolina.

As part of normal collaboration between DCSO and Dare County Schools, notification of a juvenile situation was delivered to DCS Superintendent Steve Basnight. A letter sent from DCS to parents and guardians publicly identified the juvenile as a former student at First Flight High School.
