Late evening on Saturday, March 1 the Coast Guard received a distress call from a couple who had been blown onto a shoal on the Camden County side of the North River in their 30 ft. sailing vessel.
“The couple had no control of the vessel and their anchor was failing to hold. Due to the expectation of a continued decline in the weather, it was determined that the couple needed to be removed from the vessel,” stated a Currituck County Sheriff’s Office news release.
Due to the location of the vessel and the lack of water depth, the Coast Guard requested mutual aid from the Currituck County Sheriff’s Office. Members of the Currituck County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team, tasked with Emergency Maritime Response, made their way to the vessel just after midnight on Sunday, March 2. Both passengers and their dog were safely recovered from the vessel and transported to shore, where they were immediately turned over to Currituck County EMS personnel.
No injuries were believed to have been sustained by the couple, noted the CCSO release.
