Norma Houston awarded Order of the Long Leaf Pine

Manteo resident Norma Houston was presented with the Order of the Long Leaf Pine award on March 19. The award is a high honor given to individuals who have a proven record of exemplary service to the State of North Carolina. It was bestowed by Gov. Josh Stein.
Houston recently retired from state service after 33 years, including the last five years as chief of staff to UNC System President Peter Hans in the UNC System Office. She has been a lecturer in public law and government at UNC-Chapel Hill’s School of Government and an adjunct professor at UNC-Chapel Hill’s School of Law.
She was the longtime chief of staff and general counsel to the late former Senate President Pro Tempore Marc Basnight, of Manteo.
Houston is a former county attorney for Dare County. She also served as executive director of UNC Tomorrow under former UNC System President Erskine Bowles.
A recognized expert in emergency management, she was a senior legal advisor to the North Carolina Office of Recovery and Resiliency.
