On March 12, 2025, a Dare County jury convicted Adrian Andre Humphrey, 40, of Elizabeth City, of death by distribution in the drug-related death of Dallas Twyne, reported a news release from the district attorney’s office.
The trial was presided over by Senior Resident Superior Court Judge Jerry R. Tillett. The prosecution team was comprised of Assistant District Attorneys Jennifer Karpowicz Bland and Lainy Malarney and legal assistant Olivia Hines.
The defendant was sentenced by Judge Tillett to 110-144 months in prison, the maximum sentence eligible under the sentencing guidelines.
“On March 10, 2022, law enforcement was dispatched to a parking lot near the Wanchese Assembly of God Church in Wanchese where they found Dallas Twyne, who was the passenger in a parked vehicle, unresponsive due to an apparent overdose. Twyne was transported to the Outer Banks Hospital where he was pronounced dead,” stated the release.
“Investigators with the Dare County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Task Force began an investigation into the events and identified the defendant as the source of the drugs. Eyewitnesses testified in court that they rode to Elizabeth City with the decedent and purchased drugs from the Defendant,” the release continued. “The autopsy of the deceased ruled that the death was a result of a ‘multi-drug toxicity of fentanyl and ethanol.’”
District Attorney Jeff Cruden stated “hopefully this trial, the second in Dare County where defendants have been convicted of Death by Distribution, will teach our citizens a couple of valuable lessons. One, if you haven’t done drugs before, or you currently are, don’t start or stop. You have no idea whether the next drug you buy will be the one that takes your life. Second, for those of you that sell this poison, we will continue to come after you and when able, put you in prison for a long time.”
