Wood ducks – like these on the Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge – are the only North American waterfowl that have two broods in a single year.

As early as the day after hatching, wood ducklings take the plunge out of the nest down to the water or ground, depending where the nest is located. This first leap can be from as high as 40 or more feet.

The majority of a wood duck’s diet is vegetarian, but it also eats insects.

Male wood ducks are some of the most colorful North American birds.
