Large item pickup for the unincorporated areas of Dare County only began Monday, April 7, 2025 and run continuously for approximately 12-15 days, stated the Dare County Public Works Department.
The large item pickup will be performed by private contractor Southern Disaster Recovery and there will be a strict one pass only for each unincorporated area enforced due to budgetary and time constraints, noted a Dare County news release: “Citizens are therefore asked to pay close attention to the guidelines below that indicate which specific types of items will be accepted during the upcoming large item pickup and should also place their items on the roadside in piles that are sorted by type.”
This one pass only large item pickup will only take place in unincorporated areas of Dare County, which includes Martin’s Point, Colington Island (inside and outside the gated community, Roanoke Island (unincorporated areas of Manteo, as well as Wanchese, Skyco and Mashoes), mainland Dare County (East Lake, Stumpy Point and Manns Harbor) and Hatteras Island (Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Avon, Buxton, Frisco and Hatteras).
Items will remain at the roadside throughout the duration of the large item pickup period (until the private contractor reaches each area and is able to collect items). If the private contractor does not take an item placed on the roadside by the conclusion of the 12- to 15-day collection period, it has been rejected and therefore must be disposed of at item owner’s expense.
The exact dates upon which items will be collected from specific locations throughout the unincorporated areas of Dare County will be determined by the private contractor; therefore, the Dare County Public Works Department will be unable to provide specific information regarding pickup dates and locations for each unincorporated area in advance of the collection period.
The Dare County Public Works Department only provides large item pickup for the unincorporated areas of Dare County. The county does not provide large item pickup for the incorporated towns of Manteo, Duck, Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills or Nags Head. For information regarding any large item pickup programs that may be offered in these areas, contact the respective municipality.
Accepted items include used automobile tires, automobile radiators, scrap metals (rims, motor parts, etc.), appliances (remove the doors from refrigerators), furniture, mattresses and box springs.
All items must be sorted into separate piles based on their type
The following items will not be collected: old clothing and shoes, cardboard, tree limbs, stumps, leaves and yard-clearing debris, construction/demolition materials (such as lumber, toilets, windows and doors, etc.), boats, trailers and jet skis, propane tanks and fire extinguishers, and any hazardous materials (oil-based paint, pesticides, etc.). The Dare County Public Works Department will hold a household hazardous waste collection event in three separate locations from Thursday, May 8, 2025 through Saturday, May 10, 2025. See the “Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event” section below for additional information regarding times and locations.
All normal household trash must be disposed of within regular black trash bins and will not be accepted as part of the large item pickup.
Restrictions:
- Prohibited materials, mixed piles and items that are improperly sorted will not be collected.
- If the private contractor does not take an item placed on the roadside, it has been rejected and therefore must be disposed of at owner’s expense.
- Take pride in your home and respect your neighbors. Do not leave any trash at the roadside expecting it to be picked up.
- Do not interfere with the private contractor picking up large items. If large item pickup falls on a regular trash collection day, do not block the trash bin with any other items.
- Do not stack or lean items on fire hydrants, water meters, mailboxes or other structures that would make collection and access to these essential services difficult.
- Citizens are also asked to be mindful of any overhead power lines in their area and to avoid placing items in a location where the collection trucks could be in danger of coming into contact with them.
The Dare County Public Works Department will also hold a three-day household hazardous waste collection event in three separate locations from Thursday, May 8, 2025 through Saturday, May 10, 2025. During this event, citizens can drop off motor oil in spill-proof containers, along with any paint chemicals, for safe disposal at the following locations during the designated times.
